When the 10th Special Forces Group departed for its overseas assignment at Bad Tolz, Germany,
the men who were not required to go remained on Smoke Bomb Hill and formed the 77th Group.
The commander was LTC Jack T. Shannon. The Executive Officer was LTC (Ret) Frank J. Dallas,
then a lieutenant, and the motto was "Anything, any time, any place, any how."
